Verizon recalls mobile hotspot model MHS900L
Dear GCSS Families,
Please be aware that Verizon Wireless has recalled the WiFi jetpacks/mobile hotspots that were distributed by the Greene County School System. Verizon filed the recall notice with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and posted information about the recall on their website. Verizon has sent out over-the-air, automatic software updates which will display the device’s identifying numbers on the screen and prevent the unit from charging while it is plugged in. You can check to see if your hotspot has received the updates by pressing the power button several times. The first screen usually says “Verizon 4G LTE.” Press the button again, and it should display “Getting usage data, please wait.” Press the button again, and it should display “MDN:” with 10 numbers and a message scrolling from right to left that displays “IMEI:” with 15 or 16 numbers.
If your hotspot does not display the MDN/IMEI numbers, please power your hotspot down and then start it back up. The power down should initiate the automatic software update.
Once this update has been installed, it is safe to continue using your hotspot. Additionally, Verizon recommends the following actions to promote safe operation of the hotspot:
Use only approved charging cables, including the cable provided.
When not in use, power down/turn off your device.
Place your device on a flat, solid and sturdy surface such as a floor or table.
Ensure your device is not covered for proper ventilation.
Keep devices near room temperature when in use.
Do not expose the units to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
Do not expose the unit or its battery to water or other liquids.
Do not drop the units and do not insert foreign objects into the battery or unit.
The Greene County School System is working with Verizon on a replacement plan for these devices. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
