GCSS celebrates groundbreaking of new Greene County Elementary School building on Meadow Crest Road
August 1, 2023
Greensboro, Ga.— Parents, students, faculty and staff, the Board of Education, and many Greene County community members gathered on Tuesday, August 1st to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Pre-K—5 Greene County Elementary School building on Meadow Crest Road. At the ceremony, students who will educated in the new building in just a little over a year had a chance to speak and thank the Board of Education and Superintendent Houston.
Those in attendance also heard from David Tench, the building's architect with the Atlanta-based firm Gardner Spencer Smith Tench and Jarbeau, who spoke about designing the new school building with input from Greene County's elementary faculty and staff, and Evergreen Construction Project Manager Jasmin Gonzalez, who spoke about how excited her team is to make their dreams a reality. Principal Ashlie Miller, BOE Chairman Dr. Perry Lee, and BOE Vice Chair Mr. Steve Kilgore, also spoke on the theme of unity exemplified by bringing the county's Pre-K through 5th grade students (who are currently being educated across three locations at the district's Central Office in Greensboro, the Greene County Primary School building in Union Point, and Carson Middle School) under one roof to learn together with their peers.
"When we are united in our ideals and work sacrificially to help others, great things happen," said Dr. Perry Lee, Chairman of the Greene County Board of Education. "The new Greene County Elementary School is just one example of an achievement that will prove our efforts worthy for decades to come."
The new 113,000 square foot facility is expected to educate about the 900 students when it opens next year.
“We are excited to soon be able to offer a new, state-of-the art educational facility to our youngest students,” Dr. Houston said. “The early, foundational learning years can set the trajectory for a student’s entire educational career, and we plan for this building, which will incorporate the latest innovations in education and technology, to be an important part of their strong start."
